The Community of Matheson Island started the Fishing Derby as a fundraising tool to help the community reach its goal of raising the required 20% of locally generated revenue for the budget. Other Aboriginal & Northern Affairs communities are in the same situation as ours. We look at the derby as a source of helping reach the goal and not having to increase the cost for services we provide to the community residents.
LGR (Locally Generated Revenue) is raised through sewer service fees, Municipal taxes, rentals and fundraising. If additional funds are raised through locally generated revenue, we then look at enhancing the community.
Some of the ways we use the additional LGR are for projects such as:
Some past projects include:
We are presently looking at developing picnic areas along the lakefront with gazebos. With the help of Tides Canada we have also started a community orchard , which is still in the early stages.
Each year we host a Community Canada Day event and have free hotdogs, drinks, build your own banana splits, baseball and it closes off with fireworks.
The Matheson Island Community Council would like to thank the businesses and people who donated to and supported the derby. Without your support, it wouldn't have been as successful as it was.
